About

About the Character Counter

The Character Counter is a free, browser-based tool that gives you a detailed breakdown of any text you paste or type — character counts (with and without spaces), word counts, and other text statistics — updating live as you edit. Reach for it when you need to fit copy inside a strict limit (a tweet, a meta description, an SMS, a bio field) or when you simply want a quick, accurate count without opening a heavier editor. Everything runs locally in your browser, so your text never leaves your device.

How to use the Character Counter

  1. 1Open the Character Counter page in your browser.
  2. 2Paste or type your text into the input area.
  3. 3Read the live statistics — characters, characters without spaces, and words — as they update with each keystroke.
  4. 4Edit your text down or up until the count fits the limit you're targeting.
  5. 5Copy your finished text back out and use it wherever you need it.

Common use cases

  • Trimming a headline, meta title, or meta description to stay within search-engine display limits
  • Keeping social posts, bios, and ad copy under platform character caps
  • Checking that an SMS or push notification fits in one message segment
  • Verifying form-field and database limits while designing or testing UI
  • Getting a fast, accurate word and character count for any draft without opening a full editor

Frequently asked questions

What does a character counter actually count?

It counts every character in your text, including letters, numbers, punctuation, symbols, and spaces. Most counters also show a separate total that excludes spaces, plus word counts, so you can match whichever limit a platform measures against.

Is the Character Counter free to use?

Yes, it's completely free with no sign-up, account, or usage limits. Use it as often as you need.

Is my text private and safe?

Yes. The tool runs entirely in your browser — your text is never uploaded, sent to a server, stored, or tracked. You can even use it offline once the page has loaded.

What's the difference between characters with and without spaces?

"With spaces" counts every keystroke including the space bar; "without spaces" ignores spaces and counts only visible characters. Some platforms (and many writing-rate guidelines) measure one way, some the other — having both lets you match the exact rule that applies.

Why doesn't my count match another platform's count?

Different platforms count differently — some exclude spaces, some count line breaks, and some weigh emoji or certain Unicode characters as more than one unit. Use the count that corresponds to how your target platform measures, and treat emoji-heavy text as an approximation.
