The Photo Redaction Tool permanently removes sensitive details from an image — faces, names, account numbers, addresses — by covering them with blur, pixelation, or a solid box. The effect is baked into the exported pixels rather than laid over the top as a removable layer, so the original detail is genuinely gone. Everything happens in your browser: the image is never uploaded, and exporting also strips the file's original EXIF metadata.
It's permanent in the exported file. The effect is applied to the actual pixels when the image is redrawn for export, so there's no hidden layer to lift off — unlike drawing a box over text in a PDF or a slide, where the original is very often still underneath.
Black Box or White Box. Blur and pixelation are strong visual obfuscation, but they are transformations of the original pixels rather than a complete replacement of them. For account numbers, government IDs, or faces you must protect, use a solid box.

Yes, as a side effect of how it exports. The image is rewritten from a canvas, so EXIF data such as GPS coordinates, camera model, and timestamps is not carried across to the downloaded file.
