About the QR Code Scanner

The QR Code Scanner reads QR codes from an image you upload or live from your camera, then shows the decoded text or link so you can copy it or open it. It works in every modern browser: where the browser provides native barcode detection it uses that, and everywhere else it falls back automatically to a decoder bundled with the page. Decoding happens entirely on your device — no image or camera frame is ever uploaded.

How to use the QR Code Scanner

  1. 1Choose a mode: Upload Image, or Use Camera.
  2. 2To scan a file, click to browse or drag an image containing a QR code onto the drop area.
  3. 3To scan live, allow camera access when prompted. The scanner prefers the rear camera and stops automatically the moment it reads a code.
  4. 4Read the decoded result. If it's a valid URL, an Open link button appears next to it.
  5. 5Copy the text, or pick an earlier result from the history list.

Frequently asked questions

Which browsers does the scanner work in?

All modern ones — Chrome, Edge, Safari, Firefox and Opera. Where the browser offers native barcode detection the scanner uses it, because it's the fastest option; everywhere else it automatically falls back to a decoder bundled with the page. The tool behaves identically either way, and both paths decode entirely on your device.

Is my camera feed or image uploaded?

No. Decoding runs entirely in your browser. Camera frames are processed on-device and never transmitted, and uploaded images stay local too — so it's safe to scan a code containing private data.

Where is my scan history kept?

Your last 10 unique results are saved in your browser's local storage, on this device only, so they survive a page refresh. They're never sent anywhere. Use Clear to remove them — worth doing if you've scanned anything sensitive on a shared machine.

The camera won't start — what's wrong?

Most often the camera permission was denied; check your browser's site settings and allow access. Camera access also requires a secure (HTTPS) connection, and the camera must not be in use by another app.

Can it read barcodes other than QR codes?

No — it's set to detect QR codes specifically. If an image contains several QR codes, the first one found is used.
